Take a moment to think about all of the components that make your air conditioner work. There is an outside condenser unit, consisting of a large fan, a set of coils and the compressor that pumps refrigerant through your system. There’s an inside blower unit with a motor and an additional coil. And there is a thermostat that communicates to the system when to turn on and off.

But one of the most important parts of your air conditioner is one that has no mechanical or electrical parts at all—the ducts. Your ductwork is simply a pathway through which the air passes to get to all of the various rooms of your home or commercial property. But cracks, holes, dust, and debris all have a major impact on how efficiently the air reaches the rooms, and this is more than likely already a problem with your ducts.

Small Leaks Affect Efficiency and Performance

According to the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR program, most ducts have an issue with leaks, and the average home loses about 20 – 30% of the air it produces to these leaks. Cracks and holes allow air to escape into crawlspaces or your attic, which means your AC uses a whole lot more energy to get more air to your home.
